Choose individual slats or manufactured modules. For loose slats, enter the actual face and a count or target gap, compare the end gaps, and inspect the pieces around openings.
Compare density using the actual slat face
For vertical slats, spacing repeats across wall width and the long pieces follow height. Horizontal slats reverse those axes. Enter the visible face and either a whole count or a target clear gap. Target mode selects the nearest feasible count; you can compare other counts in the same project.
A denser layout shows less backing; a wider gap makes the backing more prominent. Use an actual sample with the intended depth and finish to judge the shadows. The example count is a design option, not a required spacing standard.
Forty-eight individual slats leave equal gaps between members and at both wall edges. This is a loose-slat layout; a manufactured backing panel needs its own module dimensions and cutting rules.

Full edge slats place a complete face at both boundaries. Equal end gaps leave matching spaces before the first and after the last slat. For unequal boundaries, choose Different gaps at each end and enter the starting and far gaps. Those end spaces stay fixed while the internal clear gap is resolved.
Clear gap measures the open space between faces. Center spacing includes the slat face as well. Transfer absolute edge marks from wall zero rather than repeating a rounded gap from the previous strip.
Use module dimensions for a manufactured product
A backed panel has its own module width and height. Enter those dimensions and the pack quantity in manufactured-module mode; it does not use the loose-slat count as a substitute for panel coverage.
Inspect the panels meeting the outside wall boundaries and each opening. The drawn fit still requires the manufacturer’s permitted edge cuts, seam arrangement, and attachment rules. Required edge cuts and opening cut-outs must be permitted by the product before the shopping list is ready. Parts cut from the same source module count once, then whole packs and reserve are calculated separately. Decorative resemblance to loose slats does not establish acoustic or fire performance.
Read the remaining pieces at the opening
Measure the finished casing or obstacle rectangle from the wall’s lower-left reference. Loose slats keep the same alignment while the opening changes their remaining pieces. Review short upper and lower pieces and narrow spaces beside the casing.
Compare another whole count if an intersection is awkward. A local omission changes the visible pattern and needs a deliberate decision. Manufactured panels require a separate check that the proposed cut does not remove a necessary joining or attachment edge.
Check profile and stock after choosing the pattern
Assign the actual material profile, stock length, kerf, end trim, and spares for loose pieces. Review uninterrupted full-height runs separately from fragments around openings; equal total footage does not ensure a long enough board.
The calculator does not predict sound absorption or select backing, fasteners, adhesives, moisture details, or exterior assemblies. Use the selected product’s documented installation requirements and test its actual appearance before committing to the full field.
