Separate finished height from clear panel height

The treatment extends from the entered bottom to the entered top. Rail faces occupy part of that band; the vertical stiles fit between them. A separate projecting cap needs its own dimension and termination detail.

For an uninterrupted framed field, P clear panels require P+1 stiles. W is the measured width and S is the actual stile face. The visible opening is not a manufacturing size for a concealed panel insert.

The 42-inch finish height includes a 4-inch top rail and 6-inch bottom rail. Stiles fit between the rails, so their finished length is shorter than the overall height.

Measure the full assembly at its stopping points

Measure each wall at the planned top rail and near its lower boundary. Record actual rail and stile faces from samples, then compare the chosen top line with furniture, sills, switches, and door casing. Keep taper and uneven floor readings as local fitting notes.

When an existing baseboard forms the bottom member, represent that component with its measured dimensions and existing status. It still affects the layout but should not be bought again. Check the real profile where a stile meets it; a curved baseboard does not automatically form a flat butt joint.

Inspect the pieces above and below windows

Locate the finished casing boundary from the wall zero. Intersections remove only the occupied regions of the rails and stiles, so a window does not silently exclude an entire vertical strip of the wall. Read notched outlines and surviving pieces in the drawing.

If casing is meant to restart the composition, define the corresponding sections explicitly and compare their counts. A narrow panel beside a doorway may call for a different whole composition rather than shifting just one stile.

Check the rail-to-stile detail and purchase groups

Assign profiles to the rails and stiles according to the material you will use. Enter stock, kerf, end trim, and spare allowances after the layout is settled. Review long uninterrupted rails separately from shorter vertical pieces.

Make a sample junction with the backing and any cap. Hidden insert engagement, raised-panel joinery, substrate, fastening, and unusual corners require their own construction details. The clear face layout does not choose those details or approve electrical changes.

Wainscoting Calculator questions

Does finished height include the rails?

The top-to-bottom treatment band includes the rail faces. Stiles fit between them; a separate cap projection must be considered explicitly.

Are panels below a window preserved?

Surviving pieces remain where the actual opening does not intersect them. Inspect the window’s finished boundary and all remaining outlines.

Is the clear opening a panel-insert cut size?

No. Concealed engagement and fitting allowances depend on the selected panel assembly.
